In the current energy landscape, marked by the expansion of renewable energy production from a broad spectrum of plants, the need for strategic digital solutions forcefully emerges. These platforms indeed facilitate integration among different segments of the energy process: from production to storage, up to the exchange of energy with the grid. The goal is twofold: on one side, to maximize operational efficiency, and on the other, to leverage new business opportunities generated by the energy transition. Through the use of agile methodology and the implementation of various frameworks within the sophisticated ecosystem of Apio solutions, we have managed to develop a technologically advanced platform in 6 months to meet the significant challenge of A2A Energy Solutions to improve the management and performance of a wide range of large-scale renewable plants.

A platform to make renewable energy production more efficient

The mission undertaken by the A2A Energia group company emphasizes the importance of having a vision in the national and European energy context. However, A2A Energy Solutions' management of a wide range of large renewable plants presented very complex challenges. Among these, is the need to maximize data centralization to ensure optimal control and the implementation of specific algorithms to have a deeper and more detailed level of analysis. We have therefore developed a platform that allows the company, not only to monitor the performance of the plants in real-time but also to predict and prevent any anomalies, thus optimizing maintenance to reduce operational costs.
A digital solution built on five fundamental characteristics that have made the cloud IoT platform unique:
  • Embeddable: thanks to its flexible architecture, it can easily integrate with all commercial devices that have an open communication channel to the Internet;
  • Scalable: able to cope with the increasing workload, with thousands of data received per minute;
  • Interoperable: with pre-existing platforms, to automate data exchange between the new platform and those already used by the group;
  • Real-time and user-friendly: intuitively allows the user to understand signals of malfunction or underperformance of a resource;
  • User management: ensures privacy and prevents interference between users with different roles.
Through the use of solid and specific frameworks created by Apio, based on advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine learning, and IoT, we have created a platform capable of responding to various needs of A2A Energy Solutions. One of these is data centralization. Thanks to the platform, it is possible to control real-time data on energy produced, exported, self-consumed, irradiation, PR, and it is possible to view the energy time series to know the performance trend over time. All this is reported in a single screen where you can have an immediate look at the main KPIs.
The platform uses advanced analysis algorithms that are committed to deciphering the operational dynamics of the photovoltaic system in use. These algorithms are designed to detect any anomalies or inefficiencies and, following careful evaluation, provide targeted suggestions to improve the system's performance. An example of this advanced functionality is the algorithms' ability to detect problems in the orientation of a string. This can include a wide range of issues, from simple debris accumulation that requires cleaning.
An aspect that we have paid a lot of attention to was ensuring an intuitive and customizable interface, which allows the processing and presentation of detailed reports and technical documentation, adaptable to the specific needs of each professional figure and hierarchical level. This modularity ensures versatile data analysis and agile information sharing, fundamental for the decision-making process in every area of the organization. Furthermore, the platform is designed to process complex reports, integrating real-time and historical data, to offer a holistic and in-depth view of performance to improve operational effectiveness and long-term sustainability of the plants. Moreover, document management allows the organization and storage of technical datasheets, contracts, and schemes in an advanced digital system, ensuring data accessibility and traceability at all times. A platform that not only simplifies the daily management of the various professional figures involved in plant management but provides A2A Energy Solutions with a solid basis for informed strategic decisions that allow the company to maintain market leadership in the new energy market.
